UK’S TOP FISH & CHIP RESTAURANTS VISIT PETERHEAD TO ‘CATCH’ SOME SKILLS

Article Date: 2016-11-28

Some of the leading fish and chip businesses from across the UK are set to embark on a two-day educational study trip to North-East Scotland next week (6 - 7 December) as part of the 2017 National Fish & Chip Awards, organised by Seafish.

The five businesses – all finalists for the Independent Fish and Chip Restaurant of the Year Award - have been invited to take part in the exclusive trip which is organised by awards sponsor Seafood Scotland and funded by Connect Local.

During the trip, the finalists will visit the port of Peterhead – Europe’s leading whitefish fishing port *, accounting for around 79% of all UK whitefish landings – where they will have the opportunity to learn about the vital supply chain of haddock and cod for the fish frying industry and the wider UK food sector.

Currently undergoing a £50 million facilities upgrade, the port of Peterhead is at the forefront of the Scottish fishing market – with a total of 127,000 tonnes of fish and other seafood, worth £111 million, landed during 2015.

Starting the trip with an early morning visit to the lively fish market, the finalists will have the opportunity to explore the daily routine of Europe’s whitefish capital while also learning about the sustainable fisheries management practices followed by the Scottish fishing fleet – advancing their knowledge of the whole fishing and supply process; from catch to plate.

Although traditional catching and fish processing skills continue to play a vital role, finalists will also see how our nation’s fishing heritage is married together with modern technology and equipment, witnessing first-hand how the future of the trade is evolving. They will also begin to understand the socio-economic importance of Scotland’s busiest port and the wider impact it has on the overall UK industry.

Marcus Coleman, Chief Executive at Seafish, commented: "This trip provides finalists with a valuable opportunity to explore one of the UK’s busiest fishing ports in action. Fish and chip owners will travel from across the country to gain insight and knowledge from industry experts, and be able to take these hints and tips back to their businesses.

"I cannot stress enough how inspirational this trip is for everyone involved. It’s important that we encourage people to pursue a career in the fish and chip sector so that the industry can thrive for generations to come, but to do so they must have a strong understanding of the wider seafood industry – and that’s exactly what this trip offers.”

Clare Dean, Trade Marketing Manager at Seafood Scotland, added: "The trip will be a great opportunity for our guests to see this vibrant industry first hand and in return, for industry to showcase itself to the valuable fish and chip shop sector.

"We want to remind fryers about the great quality of fish available from Scotland. It’s fresh, it’s wild, and landed on our doorstep; important points given the focus on provenance and authenticity by the food supply chain.”

The National Fish & Chip Awards are recognised as one of the most prominent and respected seafood industry events in the UK. Widely considered as the ‘Oscars’ of the fish frying industry, they celebrate the Great British tradition of fish and chips, recognising the best talent, quality and choice offered by fish and chip businesses through 13 different award categories.
